Bruce Carlisle

Little Pencoed Farm is a 120 hectare organic dairy and arable farm run by Bruce Carlisle, it lies to the north of the Cresswell River, near Cresswell Quay. The farm has been registered with the Soil Association for 20 years, and is also managed under Tir Gofal, an environment scheme for farms. Alongside the herd of 100 dairy cows, the farm sells organic potatoes to the wholesale market, opens it’s woodland to the public and holds a yearly dance camp.

About 33 hectares of Little Pencoed is mature broad leafed woodland. A public footpath runs across the farm, through the woods to Cresswell Quay. The farm is rich in bird life and the salt marsh provides an ideal habitat for birds including shell duck, curlew and oyster catcher. Snipe can be found in the marshy fields and skylarks heard overhead. There is also a manmade pond which attracts ducks and wildlife.

The farm produces about 750 tonnes of potatoes a year for the organic wholesale market. A small amount of these are grown on the farm as part of the annual rotation and the rest on rented organic land within a 7 mile radius.

Little Pencoed Cow

There are several features of historical interest on the farm: an old lime kiln on the banks of the estuary, the ruins of a coal yard again by the river, opposite Cresswell Quay and the ruins of a tannery.

There are also 100 organic dairy cows, a Hereford bull called Barry and a Shorthorn bull called Willy. The cows are mainly Friesians, but also include Guernsey's, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire's, and Shorthorns. The milk is sold to OMSCO (Organic Milk Suppliers Co-operative) and is collected from the farm by tankers every other day.
